Lettera dell’8 ottobre 2012 inviata da Mandriolo a padre Katam Balthazar.
| Grazie per la sua lettera del 28 settembre. Abbiamo trascorso una brutta estate: molto calda e arida, ma soprattutto funestata dal terremoto. Ripetute scosse, alcune delle quali molto forti, hanno causato gravissimi danni e provocato la morte di 27 persone nella zona direttamente colpita. La popolazione era frustrata anche psicologicamente dall’interminabile serie di scosse e per un lungo periodo molti non osavano rientrare nelle proprie case. Un grande numero di edifici sono stati danneggiati, soprattutto gli edifici storici, fra cui parecchie chiese, e gli impianti produttivi, dove i crolli hanno provocato i morti. Tutto questo è avvenuto dal 20 maggio in poi, in un’ampia regione, distante non più di 30-40 km da qui. Nel nostro territorio, per fortuna, i danni sono stati limitati (crepe nelle case e molte chiese inagibli). | Thank you for your letter of 28 September. We had a bad summer: hot and dry, but especially devastated by the earthquake. Repeated shocks, some of which were very strong, caused serious damage and killed 27 people in the area directly affected. The population was frustrated, also psicologically, by the endless series of earthquakes, and for a long time many people didn’t return to their home for fear. A lot of buildings were damaged (especially historic buildings, including several churches) and industries too, where the crashes caused the most number of deaths. All this took place from 20 May onwards, in a wide region, not more than 30-40 kilometers from here. In our area, thankfully, the damage was limited (cracks in houses and many churches inaccessible). |
| I danni e la paura del terremoto si sono quindi aggiunti ai problemi della crisi economica globale che in questi ultimi anni si è abbattuta in Italia con intensità senza precedenti. La speculazione finanziaria ha accresciuto l’indebitamento di molti stati europei, fra cui l’Italia, e l’economia si è praticamente fermata, sicché molte persone, specialmente quelle che hanno perso o non trovano il lavoro, faticano a vivere. Oggi le prospettive sono molto oscure, ma occorre andare avanti fronteggiando anche momenti difficili come questi. | So, damages and fear are added to the problems of the global economic crisis that in these last years has hit Italy with unprecedented intensity. Financial speculation increased the debt of many European countries, including Italy, and the economy has virtually stopped, so many people, especially those who lost their job or can’t find it (young people), are struggling to live. Today the prospectives are very obscure, but we need to go ahead, even facing up difficult times like these. | |
| In merito alla vita parrocchiale, il centro dell’attività si sta sempre più spostando verso le altre due parrocchie sorelle dell’unità pastorale. Mandriolo è ancora presidiata da don Giancarlo, ma l’età e le sue pessime condizioni fisiche gli impediscono, di fatto, qualsiasi attività: si limita a celebrare la messa, a fatica (in carrozzina) e solo con l’aiuto di altri. In giugno si è svolta la sagra parrocchiale ed in settembre il Grest, cioè due settimane di attività educative e ricreative per proporre loro i valori cristiani. Entrambi sono andati bene, ma se si escludono questi eventi particolari, si deve purtroppo constatare che pochissimi fedeli frequentano ancora Mandriolo. | About parish life, I can say that some activities relating to young people are increasingly shifting from Mandriolo to the other two sisters parish of the pastoral-unit (“Mandrio” and “San Martino”). Mandriolo is still manned by Don Giancarlo, but, in fact, his age and bad physical conditions prevent him any activity: he can only celebrate mass, laboriously (in wheelchair) and only with assistance from others. In June, we held the parish feast named "Mandriolo in festa"; in August-September, the "Grest" that is two-weeks of educational and recreational activities to children, to provide them with Christian values. Both went well, but apart from these special events, we unfortunately must note that very few faithful still attend Mandriolo. | |

| Siamo contenti di avere contribuito alla realizzazione di questo edificio coprendo il suo intero costo. Ci abbiamo messo un certo tempo ed è un gesto piccolo come una goccia nel mare; ma è anche un gesto grande, se contribuirà a fare conoscere Gesù in tutto il mondo. | We’re glad to having contributed to the building of your new church, covering its total cost. This required us a lot of time, and it is only a little thing, as a drop in the sea; but we realize that it’s a great thing if it will contribute to make know Jesus in the world. | |
